annual Rides
Around Wilkes (RAW) road cycling event. A pdf que sheet for all
routes is available
here.
Routes
are scenic and challenging
The
20th annual RAW includes 25, 40 and 66 mile routes through the foothills
of Northwest North Carolina. The 40 and 66 mile routes include challenging
climbs through the Brushy Mountains south of Wilkesboro. With three
routes of varying length and difficulty, there's a ride just right for you.
25 Mile Route
The
25 mile route loops through the rolling hills south and east of Wilkesboro,
offering views of the Brushy Mountains and the Blue Ridge. No long
climbs, but there are plenty of shorter hills to test your mettle. The 25
mile route has a rest stop midway. This route has 1700ft of elevation in
it.
40
Mile Route
The
40 mile route is no longer an out-and-back route.. Test your early
season form on the challenging climb up Windy Gap, then follow that up with a
trip across the Little Brushies on Little Brishy Mt. Road. This is the route's
high point. Fill your need for speed with a quick decent off Mt Siani Rd. The
RAW 40 features two rest stops: This route has 2800 ft of elevation gain in it.
66
Mile Route
For
the 2012 edition of the RAW we have made it a little tougher. The 66 miler
winds through the fields, forests and orchard country of rural Wilkes, Iredell
and Alexander Counties while still climbing the two marqee climbs, Windy
Gap and Brushy Mtn Road. After Brushy Mtn Road the party isn't over as it has
been in years past. At the bottom of the Brushies you will take a left and
ride across Country Club Road followed by Germantown Rd. These two roads
will suprise you. Total elevation is 4700 ft.
2013
RAW will begin at the YMCA of Wilkesboro
The
2012 RAW has a new home. Special thanks to the YMCA
of Wilkesboro for hosting
us this year. The YMCA offers plenty of parking, hot showers and
a riverside location for the post-ride meal.
BMCC would like to thank
the YMCA with their help in hosting the ride.
