From conversations I had a couple of years ago, the big question is how can they capture local interest? This is a fun loving group but very specific to the BMX sport and as different to most riders as roadies vs. downhillers. I, for one, was too intimidated to take the jump, even for free.

From I can gather, they should have started with the NBL instead of the ABA racing league. There's more riders in the NBL series. They're the one's that run at Tanglewood.

One thing that would help with local use and probably surrounding areas if they did away with that stupid 24" tire rule. Heck even most Wal-mart bikes have 26". That's the only reason that kept me away...it wasn't worth it to buy a 24" wheelset just to use for there! What a waste of my retirement money...as I believe Lowe's donated a big chuck for it.

Another reason alot of folks stayed away was that you had to have an annual licenses (some type of BMX licenses) to ride there...here again what a bright ideal. Rolling Eyes Just imagine if you had to purchase a license to ride Dark Mtn. Man that would pack them in!!!

I guess you can see I'm a little put out by the whole thing Evil or Very Mad

Matt I understand your frustration. I know they are letting 26" tires run at other tracks. I talked to two guys at The Hornets Nest track in Charlotte this past week end that did the Burn. They raced the Cruiser Class on their hardtails.

Not sure if the anual license if its a ABA thing or Wilkes County thing. I have a 38page book from the ABA and maybe it will tell some thing about it in there.

I am trying to get in touch with Jeff Triplett at the parks and Rec. The track is in his care right now. It probably will stay a ABA track. I have been to Tanglewood (NBL) and The Hornets Nest (ABA) and the Nest had about 2-3 times more racers. Also I have talked to the Track Director at the Nest and he said he would be more than happy to help get the track up here back going and encourage his racers to come up here as alot are from the Statesville area.

From what I have saw all the racers come to race and have fun with a layed back attitude. It may not be a big hit locally at first but if we can show them what it is about and get the younger kids out there (some mothers have to stay at home because the kids WILL crash) it can get them in to other areas of cycling as they get older.

BTW: the 10yr old Expert "WORLD CHAMPION" lives in the Charlotte Area!!!

I think that the reasoning for the annual license was that ABA insurance covered the licensed riders (I'm not 100% sure on this). As with many recreational opportunities, insurance is a BIG deal here. It does seem sort of strange though, considering there has never been any sort of required license to skate/bike at the skatepark (that I'm aware of).

I would love to ride at the BMX track. It is great way to work on skills but like Guard said all the little stuff keeps us away. We are bike poor as it is without adding additional expense. It would be nice to see the track put to use.
