As always, the event drew a wide range of riders. Nine year old Alexander McCall of Statesville was the ride's youngest participant again this year. Donald Hedrick, 77, of Hickory holds the distinction of being the oldest rider in the six year history of the Rollin' Round the River Ride.
The ride also drew a number of teens who (gasp!) were actually seen in public with their parents. Young riders included Macy Christian of Rutherford College, Allison and Zachary Arensman of Rutherford College, Bridgette McLean of Deep Gap and Adam Sturgill of Lenoir.
The ride raised an estimated $2,000 for Wilkes County Special Olympics. Special Olympics gold medal cyclist Chris Clarida, 28, of Moravian Falls led the peloton at the start of the ride. Chris rode to Fort Defiance and back with his coach, Keith Summerford.
