Kenda Dark Mountain races attract top mountain bikers
Top mountain bikers from across the Southeast converged on Wilkesboro July 8-9 for the Kenda Dark Mountain MTB Races.
180 riders raced in downhill and cross country events at W. Kerr Scott Reservoir's Dark Mountain Trail. The races were presented by the Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club.
The Kenda Dark Mountain event was the ninth stop in the 2006 Cane Creek Cup series. The N.C./S.C. mountain biking championship series includes 12 competitions at various venues across the placeCarolinas.
The two-day event brought two completely different types of mountain bike racing to Wilkes.
"Saturday's event was a fast paced, heart pounding downhill competition," said event coordinator Matt Adams.
At one minute intervals, helmeted riders in body armor took off from the top of the ridge. The objective: Barrel their bulky full suspension bikes down the mountain as fast as possible while taking on several mandatory jumps and obstacles.
The downhill racers competed in 13 different categories based on age, gender and experience. The testosterone flowed freely, with only two females among the 67 competitors on Saturday.
Joe Haley, 22, of Raleigh was the fastest downhiller, flying down the course in 1:21.
Sunday, cross country racers took to the trails for what Adams called “a lung busting competition."
Cross country racers competed in 29 different categories and rode anywhere from six to 24 miles. The winding course included two tough climbs from the shores of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir to the top of Dark Mountain.
While Saturday's riders completed their gravity-assisted runs in minutes, the cross country crowd took hours to complete their laps through the twists, turns and grinding climbs at Dark Mountain.
Aptly named Charlie Storm, 40, of Sanford blitzed the course. Storm was the fastest cross country rider, finishing four laps in 2:00:35.
“The Cane Creek event went extremely well,” Adams said. “There were no serious injuries and the weather was awesome. We would like to thank our sponsors and all the race volunteers. Our club and community really do pull together to make all our events a success, and that was definitely demonstrated this weekend.”
Matt did more than manage the event. He came in second in the Men's Expert Downhill Age 30-Up category. Matt has spent countless hours helping build Dark Mountain's downhill course, but he was able to ride it, top to bottom, in about 90 seconds flat. His wife, Ellen, competed in both the downhill and cross country competitions.
Other local riders included Geoff Pendry, 20, of Hays and Mike Lockhart, 29, formerly of Mulberry. Lockhart won the Men's Sport Cross Country Age 19-29 category. Pendry finished fifth.
The event was the second mountain biking event at Kerr Scott in 2006. About 200 riders participated in the Burn 24-Hour Challenge, an around-the-clock endurance event, Memorial Day weekend.
The event gave members of the Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club another chance to show off the trail system at Dark Mountain. Since November 2002, the local cycling club has designed and constructed more than a dozen miles of multi-use trails at Kerr Scott Lake. Click here to visit our Kerr Scott Trail Guide.
As the word of the trail network has spread, the trails at Kerr Scott are becoming a tourist attraction. Mountain bikers from across the region are driving to Wilkesboro to take on the tough terrain, placeAdams said.
