More than 200 cyclists headed for the hills Saturday, May 6th during the thirteenth annual Rides Around Wilkes road cycling event.
The RAW offered team competition for the first time and rolled from a new venue, the Wellness Center of Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro.
The official finish line for the event was moved from West Park to the Wilkes County Courthouse so riders wouldn't have to contend with traffic signals under timed conditions.
Boone's Patrick Brittain finished first, completing the 70 mile course in 3:13:20, with an average speed of almost 22 m.p.h.
Brittain sailed through the finish line alone. Andy Mitcheltree of Blowing Rock, Alex Ryan of Winston-Salem, Tom McDonnell of Boone, Brandon Hill of Davidson and Ronnie Dean of Kernersville were about a minute behind.
A Message from Event Director Scott Nelson
First of all, there is no ride if there are no riders! Thanks to all our riders for their continued support.
Second, you've got to have great volunteer support and our club stepped up to the plate! I do want to make special mention of the following:
Regina Wagoner (and family) .... what a superb job on registration and she's not even a member!
Matt Adams .... you da' man!
Steve Britton for his great planning for the rest stops (not to mention he started this whole thing .... does anyone remember the Spring Fever Reliever?)
Matt Daye for great planning of the SAG's
Tim Murphy for keeping the website up to date and driving the publicity campaign.
Third .... without sponsors, rides of this magnitude are hard to do. The Wellness Center and staff were the most gracious hosts a ride director could hope for. Thanks also to:
Walmart and Coca-Cola for their financial support
Cook's for for setting up shop on site to assist cyclists for last minute needs
Wilkes County Sheriff's Department, North Wilkesboro Police, Wilkesboro Police, N.C. State Highway Patrol and Wilkes County Emergency Sevices for keeping a watchful eye over us
Wilkes County government for letting us use the courthouse parking lot
Fourth .... as I write this and watching it pour down rain and driving home Friday night in the rain, I want to thank Bruce Watts for smiling down on us and giving us great weather!

Beth Frye of Boone was the fastest female on the 70 mile course, finishing 17th overall.
The team competition was hard fought. Boone Bike edged second place Rocky River Road Club team #1 by about two minutes. Andy Mitcheltree, Tom McDonnell, Kent Feid, Rick Geldmeier, Carl Behan III, Donovan Carroll and Anthony Dorage represented Boone Bike. The Magic Cycles team finished third, followed by the Habitual Neck Steppers (a team of BMCCers and friends) and the Rocky River team #2.
The RAW was a homecoming of sorts, with plenty of former Wilkes residents in attendance, including Rick Geldmeier, Michael Lockhart, Brandon Eller, Mike York and Shawn Horton.
The RAW's youngest riders did well. Fourteen year old Bridgette McLean of Deep Gap finished the 70 mile route in 4:26. Teenager Mark Daye of Traphill completed the 25 mile route with his dad Matt.
A Winston-Salem rider was injured Saturday morning in a single bike accident on Speedway Road on the RAW 40-mile route. He was transported to Winston-Salem for medical treatment.
Event director Scott Nelson spoke with the family of the injured rider and issued this report: "The rider fell off his bike and sustained six broken ribs, a broken collarbone, and has staples in his head to close lacerations. His wife called me (Sunday) morning to let me know other than that he will be fine. She was in front of him on the bike when the accident occurred and doesn't know what happened. It seemed to her to be a mechanical issue but she does not know for sure. Response to the emergency was fast. Because he lost conciousness, they elected to go Winston-Salem."
