Route Briefing and Safety Notes

These safety notes will be reviewed with all riders the morning of the ride:

The HP&A is not a race. The course will be open to motor vehicles and riders must obey all traffic regulations.
Mile 6.0: Be careful entering U.S. 21 from Oklahoma Road. Ride single file on U.S. 21. It is a busy highway.
Mile 14.1: The metric route crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway. Half metric riders will turn left onto the Blue Ridge Parkway south. Signs will be posted and a rest stop volunteer will help direct you at this point.
By law, riders must ride single file on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Violators could be ticketed.
Metric mile 27.0: The left turn from the Parkway onto Peak Creek Road is at the bottom of a long hill. It comes up in a hurry! No pavement markings are allowed on the Parkway, so be on the lookout for HP&A directional signs. If you get to the Blue Ridge Music Center exit, you missed the turn.
Metric mile 32.5: Go straight at this intersection across Va. Route 89.
Metric mile 49.4: The route enters U.S. 21. Stop and be absolutely sure the highway is clear before turning left onto 21.
Metric mile 52.8: The route enters the Blue Ridge Parkway at the top of the Mahogany Rock climb. A corner marshal will be stationed here. Please follow his directions.
Half metric mile 23.7, metric mile 59.1: The stop sign for U.S. 21 is at the bottom of a steep hill on Camp Butler Road.  Stop and be absolutely sure the highway is clear before turning right onto 21. Please ride single file on U.S. 21.
Half metric mile 26.0, metric mile 61.4: The route enters Oklahoma Road. This is a steep descent with several tight turns. Look out for gravel in turns. Be especially careful on the tight right turn just past Liberty Knob Church.
Cue sheets distributed the morning of the ride will include mobile phone numbers for SAG vehicles and rest stop personnel. In case of emergency, call 911. If you need any other assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

"It's a little tough, but you'll be glad you did it."
